Grimsby Town Shadow 5-0 Barnsley Shadows
Grimsby Town U19 Shadow side entered their final EFL CEFA National Cup group match against Barnsley knowing even if they won, they would rely on results elsewhere to qualify for the knockout stages.
Regardless of the distraction Town Shadows set about their business on the pitch in a professional manner. After forcing The Reds ‘keeper into 2 or 3 smart saves in the early stages, Grimsby were finally rewarded for dominance with a goal from Snell, the poacher was on hand to tap into an empty net after a mix up in the Barnsley defense.
Just as it looked like the score line was going to stay at 1-0 heading into half time the Mariners earned a corner. Defender Smith rose highest and nodded into the top corner to double Grimsby’s lead.
It was all one-way traffic in the second half. On 55 minutes Snell won a penalty with some neat footwork, the striker stepped up but saw his spot kick saved, luckily for him Haines was on hand to turn home the rebound.
Grimsby’s next goal came from a swift counterattack, Piggott in the Mariners goal collected a cross and immediately bowled it out to Ridley on the right wing who fed it down the line to Perry. Perry’s cross was perfect for Lyons who finished well from 8 yards.
Town Shadows then put the icing on the cake in the closing stages. Perry picked the ball up in the middle and fed an inch perfect pass through to Ware who raced on to the ball from the left wing before guiding the ball beyond the onrushing goalie.
Despite this victory, the team learned shortly afterwards that the other result in the group hadn’t gone their way and they weren’t to progress.
If you’re in year 11 and would like a career in sport Grimsby Town Shadows are taking applications now.
