A message from our Careers Advisor ahead of A Level results

We hope you are all excited about collecting your results on Thursday after all of your hard work. Below is a short message from our Careers Advisor about your options.

Waiting for results is always a bit of an anxious time for students.  I am confident that most of our students will get their preferred choice as in previous years.  For those that miss out Franklin staff will be in college to help students to look at university options as well as employment and training options.

On Thursday there will be five universities available at college in the morning from 8 o clock offering clearing advice:  GIFHE, Hull, Lincoln, Bishop Grosseteste and Coventry.

My best advice is not to panic!  If you have just missed a grade then contact the university where you were holding an offer - you may still get your place.  Be prepared to be flexible as in my experience many universities will offer an alternative course.  I know of students who have gone to their chosen university on a slightly different course and have been very successful.

Universities including the Russell Group universities will have places in clearing.  For those students who have done better than expected they can 'trade up' using adjustment.  You can hold on to your original offer whilst looking.

Contact universities but don't rush into a decision.  Have your personal statement to hand and your achieved grades and think of some questions to ask about the course and accommodation etc. If you get an offer then do try and visit - many will be holding Open Events this weekend. Remember you will be spending at least three years at University so it wouldn’t be wise to choose something unseen.

Formal choices can be added on UCAS Track from 3pm Thursday.  If you are in clearing you will have a clearing number (which universities will ask you for) but get your research going and start looking.

In some cases it may better to take a year out and apply again in the next cycle.  Staff in college can support you with this.  Every year we support former students who, for one reason or another, have decided to apply later.
