Extra Curricular Activities

At Franklin College there is an opportunity for you to become involved in a variety of activities outside of your normal timetable. It could be drama, rock bands or orchestra, the law society, foreign exchanges or many other activities. If you want to take up a new language for interest or holidays, how does French, Spanish, German or Russian appeal? Or maybe sport is more your thing? All students can take part in sports at Franklin, regardless of whether or not sport is being studied as a subject. Various sports are available, and if they’re not currently and you can get a team together the possibilities are there. These are just a few of the opportunities that could develop new interests and offer new challenges.

The Franklin College Student Association

Joining Franklin College in 2011 will be an exciting time for anyone wishing to get involved in the Student Association. Run by Executive Student Officers elected annually, the Student Association is the hub of out-of-hours student activities. From organizing parties, to putting on charity events, to discussing issues affecting the way Franklin College is run, this is where you can really get involved and make a difference to student life. The Student Association is open to anyone who wants to get involved, and there are loads of different ways to be a part of it.  You can either become a full member and come along to our meetings, or join one of our teams where you could just help organise events. If you want tobe a part of the action without actually joining, then why not simply buy yourself an NUS card? As well as getting you discounted entry to Franklin College Student Association events, you can also use it for discounts in loads of local and national stores! Listen out for notices from your personal tutor in September on how you can be a part of it.

 Global Agendas Group

The Global Agendas Group provides a forum for like-minded people to meet on a regular basis to discuss global issues and participate in fundraising activities. Recent events have included a talk comparing the Ghanaian educational experience with the British experience; a first-hand account of the events that occurred after the partition of India; a discussion about the rights and wrongs of giving to charitable causes and a trip to the Wilberforce Museum in Hull. Recent fund-raising activities have included several cake sales; assisting with the organization and running of a charity concert; selling raffle tickets. All money raised is given to our partner charity in Ghana, Amazing Grace. This charity works with HIV widows to provide them with opportunities to develop skills and become economically independent. The group will appeal to anyone who is interested in expanding their horizons and discussing controversial global Issues. Besides being intrinsically worthwhile, membership of the group provides you with the opportunity to develop a series of ‘life skills’ which are much sought by universities and employers. For example you can improve your communication skills through participation in topical discussions, develop your organisational ability by running charity events and honing your time-management and inter-personal skills.

Ghana Exchange

Every year students have a unique opportunity to participate in the college’s Ghana exchange programme.  Participants host a Ghanaian student and give them a taste of student life in Grimsby. The college also arrange trips for everyone involved (for example: Lincoln, York, London). Whilst in Ghana there are opportunities to experience life in a Ghanaian boarding school. There are also numerous trips and excursions to places of historical and social interest. Past students have described the exchange programme as a life-changing experience.

Debating Team

If you like arguing then the college debating team will be right up your street! Every year the team competes in the inter-college championship and in 2007 we won the event. In addition to learning the process and procedures of parliamentary debate you will receive training in how to debate and will have the opportunity to hone your skills with other members of the team before the competition. Debating is a fun activity which helps to develop your thinking skills and will definitely improve your ability to communicate often complex arguments to a large number of people.
